On Domestic Considered as One of the Fine Arts

Lizzie Ridout, jeune artiste anglaise aux multiples talents,  achève son année passée à la British Library en tant que Pearson Creative  Research Fellow. D'une inépuisable curiosité, elle a débusqué les textes les plus précieux et les plus bizarres sur les objets et les rituels du monde domestique qu'elle a mis en scène tout au long de 2006 dans un magnifique scrapbook  Art Sparklets.  En voici quelques extraits  (cliquez pour agrandir) :

Detail taken from my sketchbook   of one of Queen Victoria’s embroidered handkerchiefs. After the  death of the Prince Consort, the Queen – and the nation – went into mourning. To show the extent of her bereavement, the Queen had  all her monogrammed handkerchiefs stitched with white and black teardrops.    (White was considered deeper mourning than both grey and mauve).

Mais son inventivité ne s'arrête pas là comme le montre ce paillasson éphémère : Welcome.  Le passage entre le dedans et le dehors est ici pris à rebours : au lieu d'effacer les traces du dehors, le paillasson en créé de nouvelles de manière à rendre visible la chorégraphie des pas de vos invités, grâce à  leurs semelles marquées par la craie.

Instructions for use:
        1. Choose an appropriate doorway or step for your Welcome stencil.
        2. Sprinkle chalk dust/cocoa/dust removed from your vacuum cleaner liberally  over the surface.
        3. Remove stencil carefully to avoid disturbing dust.
        4. Observe as people pass over your Welcome, inadvertently destroying   one artwork and creating another.

J'aime tout particulièrement son travail sur la poussière : le "velours du pauvre" (beggar's velvet), comme on la dénommait  familièrement en anglais. A l'aide de pochoirs autocollants invisibles, attendez que le temps fasse son affaire et vous verrez apparaître un motif.

Signalons encore son livre en trente parties construit autour des papiers recouvrant l'intérieur des tiroirs de commode, très significatif de sa réflexion sur la sphère domestique.  Une installation pour son diplôme de fin d'études au Royal College of Art (2002, Communication Art and  Design)
 

"Who knows what these cupboards and chests and wardrobes reveal. The only hints that suggest anything about the previous owners are the remnants that are left behind: the patterned papers which perhaps  due to accelerated consumption, are discovered increasingly rarely inside  old drawers. Measured and cut, sometimes accurately, sometimes less so,  each one adds a further layer to the cross section of lives lived, evidence  of the gestures of everyday rituals and unspoken domestic arrangements."
      

Une mention particulière à son Memorial for the Named and the Faceless, né de son intérêt pour les rubans tissés de noms que l'on trouve cousus aux vêtements et qui démultiplient le pouvoir de fascination des objets trouvés : la personne est nommée mais reste totalement inconnue.

Oh, the busy work Miss Matty and I had in chasing the sunbeams, as they fell in an afternoon right down on this carpet through the blindless window! We spread newspapers over the places and sat down to our book or our work; and, lo! in a quarter of an hour the sun had moved, and was blazing away on a fresh spot; and down again we went on our knees to alter the position of the newspapers. We were very busy, too, one whole morning, before Miss Jenkyns gave her party, in following her directions, and in cutting out and stitching together pieces of newspaper so as to form little paths to every chair set for the expected visitors, lest their shoes might dirty or defile the purity of the carpet. Do you make paper paths for every guest to walk upon in London?"

Merci pour cette découverte. Le travail de Lizzie Ridout est tout à la fois passionnant et beau. Il faut de plus un esprit particulièrement aiguisé et plein de finesse pour transmettre tout l'intérêt de ces recherches. Tout comme votre blog, elles permettent d'être plus attentif à son environnement quotidien et le monde paraît plus insolite et surprenant. Ce sont comme de nouvelles grilles de lecture qui sont proposées pour notre plus grand bonheur.
